Why Bestech and Sam are different


We are different because we are bridge engineers who have tailored our bridge design software to a very specific marketplace (the design of small to medium span bridges) and the benefits to the bridge engineer are speed and accuracy, which is exactly what is wanted.

Generally, bridge software is marketed for the design of long span bridges (such as suspension and cable-stayed bridges) and much emphasis is placed on time dependant effects, suspension or cable-stay bridges, advanced dynamics, second order analysis etc.

Bestech are different because we focus on small to medium span bridges, which are probably 90% of all new bridges. For these bridges the requirements for dynamic and second order analysis are limited but, in contrast to long span bridges, the traffic loads are very important.

The construction methods for short to medium span bridges are usually steel/concrete composite, precast pretensioned, or plain reinforced concrete. Sometimes post-tensioning is used. Typically, the design fees for such bridges are quite low, so the design process needs to be fast and effective.

Because we address a different sector of bridge design, Sam is a different type of product. Sam's main goal is to design the main components of the bridge, and this it does very well to a variety of design codes (including Eurocodes) once it has information about moments and shears etc. This information is derived from the loading and analysis modules, which are quick and easy to use because they have only to analyse relatively simple bridges.

The analysis modules are different because of the bridge traffic load optimisation module. In short to medium span bridges the placing of the traffic loads is critical, and made very complex by the requirement to have varying axle spacings and track widths for the vehicles, as well as having to place vehicles both longitudinally and transversely within traffic lanes, which themselves can be in variable locations. Sam does this to probably the highest standard in the world.
