Q. How do I install multiple
licenses of SAM for use over a network when each license has
different licensed components?
The installation instructions for
this configuration are given below. Please note that these
instructions only apply to copies of SAM that are licensed for
use on network drives.
- At the file server, log on as
the administrator user.
- Insert the SAM CD and run
Setup.exe
- When asked where you want to
install the software select the required location but add the SAM
license number to the directory name. For example:
- The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\SAM
- Instead of accepting this location, enter the following
installation directory
- C:\Program Files\SAM <license number> where <license
number> corresponds to the SAM license number.
You may chose to replace C:\Program Files with a different
installation location.
- Complete the installation
following the on-screen prompts.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each
license of SAM. This will result in you having a series of SAM
installation directories on your file server. For example, you
may have the following installation directories:
- C:\Program Files\SAM 036
- C:\Program Files\SAM 126
- C:\Program Files\SAM 151
- Change directories to the
C:\Program Files\SAM <license number>\Sam
directory.
- Run the program
Samlic.exe
- Perform step 1 in the Sam
License Manager to transfer the copy protection from the CD to
the C:\Program Files\SAM <license number>\Sam directory.
Note the serial number provided.
- Repeat step 8 for each installed
license of SAM. Note each serial number.
- Email the serial numbers to the
SAM License Code Request Center noting which serial number
corresponds to which SAM license. A number of activation codes
will be emailed back to you, one for each license of
SAM.
- Change directories to the
C:\Program Files\SAM <license number>\Sam
directory.
- Run the program
Samlic.exe
- Perform step 2 in the SAM
License Manager to activate the SAM license. Enter the activation
code supplied by Bestech Systems. This copy of SAM will now be
licensed.
- Repeat steps 11 to 13 for each
license of SAM installed.
- You
will now have a number of activated licenses of SAM installed on
your file server.
The next step is to create
shortcuts to each copy of SAM on each client workstation that
requires access to SAM. To do this follow the steps below:
- Log on to the client
workstation
- Using the Network Neighborhood,
browse to the installation directory on the file server for the
first SAM license.
- Open the Sam
directory.
- Right click on the file
Sam2000.exe and select Create Shortcut from the pop-up menu. This
will create an icon called Shortcut to Sam2000.exe
- Right click on the icon Shortcut
to Sam2000.exe and select Copy from the pop-up menu.
- Right click on the client
workstation desktop and select Paste to copy the icon onto the
desktop.
- Right click on the Shortcut to
Sam2000.exe on the client workstation desktop and select Rename
from the pop-up menu. Change the name of the icon to SAM License
<license number> where <license number> is replaced
with the SAM license number for that installation.
- Repeat steps 2 to 7 for each SAM
license.
- Repeat steps 1 to 8 for each
client workstation.
You will now be able to run any
license of SAM on any configured workstation on your network.

Q. How do I upgrade SAM from a
standalone machine to a network version?
The process for upgrading a
standalone license of SAM to a network license involves five
steps.
1) -- Install SAM on the file server
Follow the standard installation instructions to install the
software on the file server. This installation can be performed
directly on the file server or using a client workstation logged
on to the file server as an Administrator user.
2) -- Install the copy protection on the file server
To install the copy protection on the file server, follow the
steps below. Note that when using a Windows NT file server, these
steps must be performed logged on as Administrator directly on
the file server, not whilst logged in using a ]client
workstation. When installing on a Novell file server, the
installation of the license is performed whilst logged on to the
file server as Administrator using a client
workstation.
- Insert the distribution CD in
the CD drive.
- Run the License Manager program
and click on the button labeled Step 1: Install License, and
follow the prompts, noting the Serial Number that is displayed,
then click on the OK button to return to the main form. (The
serial number may also be displayed by clicking on the button
labeled Display License Information).
3) -- Move the activated license
to the file server
To move the activated license from the standalone PC to the file
server, follow the steps below. Once again note that when using a
Windows NT file server, these steps must be performed logged on
as Administrator directly on the file server, not whilst logged
in using a client workstation. When installing on a Novell
network, the installation of the license is performed whilst
logged on to the file server as Administrator using a client
workstation.
- Run the License Manager Program
on the old PC, and click on the Move License button. Enter the
serial number obtained above. Click on the OK button, and note
carefully the activation code. Note that this process
de-activates the License on the old PC, and the program will no
longer run on this PC. (If you click on the OK button before
noting the activation code, you will be unable to display it
again, but you will find that it has been stored in a file called
'codedump.txt' in the "Current Path to License"
folder.)
- Return to the file server, click
on the button labeled Step 2: Activate License, and follow the
prompts, entering the activation code obtained from the old PC.
Click on the OK button when completed to exit the
program.
The SAM Section and Beam modules are
now installed on the file server - check to see that the SAM
splash form appears when the program is run.
4) -- Changing the license parameters to enable network
usage
Changing the License parameters is performed using the SAM
License Manager with the Step 2: Activate License option.
- Run the License Manager program
and click on the button labeled Display License Information and
note the Serial number. (This may be different to the number in
the Bestech Systems records if the License has been moved from
the PC it was originally installed onto). Click on the OK button
to return to the main form
- Contact Bestech Systems quoting
the serial number to obtain the revised activation code to enable
network usage.
- Click on the button labeled Step
2: Activate License, and follow the prompts, entering the
activation code obtained from Bestech Systems. Click on the OK
button when completed, and exit the program.
You will now have a number of
activated licenses of SAM installed on your file server.
5) -- Configure client workstations
Shortcuts to SAM now need to be created on each client
workstation that requires access to the program. To do this
follow the steps below:
- Log on to the client
workstation
- Using the Network Neighborhood,
browse to the server directory where the SAM directory is
installed on the file server.
- Right-click on the server
directory where the SAM directory is installed and choose the
"Map network drive..." option.
- Select a free drive letter to
map to the network path, select the option to "Reconnect at
logon" and then select "OK".
- Open Windows Explorer and change
the selected drive letter to the drive mapped at step
4.
- Change directories to the SAM
directory containing the program file SAM2000.exe.
- Right click on the file
SAM2000.exe and select "Create Shortcut" from the pop-up menu.
This will create an icon called "Shortcut to
SAM2000.exe".
- Right click on the icon
"Shortcut to SAM2000.exe" and select "Copy" from the pop-up
menu
- Right click on the client
workstation desktop and select "Paste" to paste the icon onto the
desktop.
- Right click on the "Shortcut to
SAM2000.exe" on the client workstation desktop and select
"Rename" from the pop-up menu. Change the name of the icon to
SAM.
- Repeat steps 1-10 for each
client workstation which requires access to SAM.
You will now be able to run SAM on any configured workstation on
your network. If there are any queries relating to the
instructions given on this information sheet, please contact us.
